In the Loop
Here at DVBC, we just want you to be aware of interesting and relevant developments. Here is the APRIL, 2012 newsletter.
Action Items:
- One of our missionaries, the Wiebe family, is returning from India on furlough. They need some help to furnish the house where they will be living through December. They need a car, too. Maybe we can help. Contact Bonnie Mason for more information on other items they may need.
Community Group Information:
- NEXT COMMUNITY GROUP LEADER TRAINING. I know this is a long way away, but please mark your calendars for Saturday, September 8 at 8:00 am. It’s the next Leaders Training session. Plan on attending. We will focus on the upcoming fall for community groups. Bonnie will send you a reminder.
- PREACHING SCHEDULE. There will be no study guides after April 29. You are on your own for group discussion if your group continues into May or even the summer. Here are some suggestions:
- Discuss the Sunday sermon from the last Sunday. The sermon is recorded and available under Resources. It is posted by Tuesday after the Sunday of the sermon.
- There are some 6 week DVD programs for small groups which you would like. Contact Bonnie Mason at the office.
- Come to our Sunday adult classes being offered this summer (for the first time!). See below.
- PLAN ON ATENDING ONE OR MORE OF OUR “SUMMER SERIES” CLASSES. Another option for your group this summer is to join one of the classes being planned for the summer. Go as a group. The Summer Series will offer a choice of 6 week sessions on various Bible and life topics taught by some of our best lay teachers. Begins June 17 and runs through July on Sundays. You can come to one week or all weeks, depending on your schedule. Maybe you want to sample each of the classes. These are live, interactive classes. Look for the Summer Series information on the Adult Ministries page.
Church Wide:
- At least 10,000 people came to Hope Fest on April 24, including a big contingent of volunteers from Desert View! Many were served and many were blessed with medical care, clothing, supplies, haircuts, counseling and food. Doug Johnston’s famous locomotive helped cook 18,000 hot dogs at the event. Jim Welter helped organize our church’s volunteer base for this event. We are a church that serves, and Hope Fest was a great example. Look for it again next year.
- The Two Financial Peace University classes (Dave Ramsey) have ended. 130 people attended. Great stories of how we got our financial houses in order and dealt with debt. One couple paid off $10,850 of credit card debt during the 13 weeks of the class! How about that? We hope to offer the FPU class again this fall, probably at night. Thanks to Colbert and Stephanie Chang and Jim and Kelley Barrow who were the class leaders. They did a great job!
- There will be a Ministry Partner meeting on May 20, so save that date if you are a ministry partner. We will vote for a budget and for 4 new Shepherds. It’s a pot luck. Plus we will provide a summary of ministry at DVBC over the last 11 months.
- Women in the Word and Boys in the Book resume in the fall with a study in the book of Hebrews.
- VBS is the week of June 4-8. Last year we had almost 600 kids. This year could be even bigger. They need volunteers to help and:
- Some supplies are needed for the teachers – pick up a “kite” from the display in the lobby which has a supply item listed. Bring the supply back to the table.
- We hope to offer some scholarships to VBS for special kids – like the House of Hope kids. Cost is $20 per child until Wednesday, May 16th. After that, it is $30 per child. If you can help with a scholarship, stop at the lobby table. Checks are payable to Desert View Bible.
- We are testing the water with a Marriage Retreat this August. August 10-12 at the Living Waters Retreat Center in Cornville, Arizona. Space is limited to 23 couples and we have 14 couples signed up already. Please contact Bonnie Mason. Cost is $295. A deposit of $60 is required. If this works, we might expand the Marriage Retreat into a bigger venue and event next year.
