‘…Test me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.’ Mal. 3:10(b)
This is the only place in Scripture where God says to “test” Him to see if what He says works. Normally, God does not encourage His people to test Him. But here, God is giving us a challenge. He is daring us to test Him to see if His promise is true.
Maybe He asks us to do this because He knows we are fearful and find it hard to trust Him, especially when it comes to our finances. As we give first to God, then He will pour out blessings in response. It is not “God bless me first, and then I will give back to You.”
Are you willing to “test” Him and take the risk to trust that He will do as He promised to open the “floodgates of heaven” in superabundance, as we are obedient in giving to Him? Imagine what that might look like! Wow!
His blessings come because of His nature as the Giver. He loves to give good things to us. Every good and perfect blessing comes not from the labor of our own hands, but from our generous God. How often we forget to thank God for the good gifts He gives!
Our giving is a thankful response for what we have already received. We are blessed in order to be a blessing to others.
Blessing is a product of generosity. Troy Keaton
Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase. Martin Luther King Jr.
REFLECTION: How does my giving reflect what I am most thankful for? What can I cheerfully, and not fearfully, give to God?
PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to be willing to step out in faith and “test” Your promise, by being an obedient, cheerful giver.
