Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt. 6:19-21
Where is your treasure located—in heaven or earth? Is your focus on the eternal or the temporary? When you look at your financial statements, can you find your heart for God? Your heart will follow your treasure. Is your heart where you hoped to find it?
We store up earthly treasures, not just because of greed or selfishness, but also due to our fears and insecurities. Putting our hope in these earthly treasures can multiply our anxieties due to their uncertainty, whereas, joy comes with the treasures we are storing up in heaven.
May we be like Paul and consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord, and consider all things garbage so that we might gain Christ (Phil. 3:8).
Father, I want to know Thee, but my coward heart fears to give up its toys…. Please root from my heart all those things which I cherished so long and which have become a very part of my living self, so that Thou mayest enter and dwell there without a rival. A.W. Tozer
REFLECTION: What do your finances tell you about your heart?
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank You for the reminder about my heart being where my treasure is located. Help me to focus more on storing up eternal treasures in heaven, rather than temporary earthly ones.
